Top 10 blessings
By Karla Pomeroy
As you gather around the dinner table filling your plate with turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy, green beans and pumpkin pie, I wonder how many of us will think about how the holiday began and why we get the fourth Thursday of November off from work.
Do we get Thanksgiving Day off because we need a day to load up on carbs to be ready for serious shopping on what has become known as Black Friday? Is it a day to watch the NFL games or a day set aside just to eat turkey? No. However, except for that one class in grade school that teaches us about the Pilgrims — the landing at Plymouth Rock and then the following harvest celebration in 1621, we don’t really think about that day 400 years ago. Thanksgiving rather has turned into a day for all Americans to pause and give thanks for their own blessings rather than remembering the Pilgrims and the blessings they celebrated after a year of hardship in their new country.
Just as the Pilgrims found blessings after a year of hardships, Americans can find blessings among the tough economic times hitting this country. There is always much to be thankful for.
My top 10 things I’m thankful for this week are:
1) My wonderful husband of nine years.
2) Our two adorable dogs, which have become our “children” and give us many moments of joy.
3) Our house in Basin that provides a roof over our head and a place to call home.
4) A job opportunity that brought me to Basin, a wonderful, small town. When I was in the process of moving, someone in Laramie told me that they could not live in a small town with no stop light and where the mail was not delivered to your home. I told him that was the kind of community I was moving to and that it was just my kind of town. Growing up in Thermopolis, and just outside of Thermopolis at Hamilton Dome made me into a small town girl.
5) In today’s economy I am thankful for having a job.
6) A great staff here at the Basin Republican Rustler that makes my job easy and who go above and beyond to try and put out a quality newspaper for the community.
7) Even though they lost — to the Raiders — I am thankful for the opportunity last weekend to watch the Broncos live at Invesco Field. While I love watching football on TV, I enjoy the atmosphere that you only get from being there in person.
8) Wonderful family and friends to share my life with.
9) Being in good health.
10) And, last, but definitely not least, you, our readers, whom we strive to inform on a weekly basis about the happenings of Basin and the surrounding community.
May your Thanksgiving Day and weekend be blessed. May you be able to count many blessings this year and be truly thankful for all that has been provided to you.
