Anderson, Getzfreid post new ‘Q’ times
G-R has four state qualifiers heading into final home dual

By Nathan Oster

A third of the way through its 10-week season, Greybull-Riverside has already seen four of its team members qualify for the State 3A Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled for Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 in Gillette.
Though the team success has been limited by a lack of numbers, G-R is excelling individually –– and no one more so than senior Hope Anderson, who has bettered the state qualifying standards in five events: the 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, and the 100, 200 and 500 freestyles.
Right behind her, having qualified in the 100 backstroke and 100 and 200 freestyles, is Amber Getzfried, followed by Leah Hoblit, in the 100 breaststroke, and Ariel Mead, in the diving.
An invitational Saturday in Riverton was the latest opportunity for G-R’s top swimmers and divers to showcase their talents.  Facing the top competition in the state’s 4A schools, G-R didn’t make a run as a team, but did have some individual breakthroughs.

Kemmerer spoils Homecoming

By Karla Pomeroy

The Kemmerer Rangers, the Class 3A defending champions and currently ranked No. 1, came in to Basin Friday night and spoiled the Rebels home opener and the 2008 Homecoming game with a 51-6 thrashing of Riverside.
“We knew going in that they were a very good team and they did nothing to change our opinion,” Coach Michael McGuire said.

Huskies pitch another shutout
Win over Chiefs gives Huskies positive conference start

By Nathan Oster
It was a perfect night for football — and for the Burlington defense — Friday night in Fremont County.
The resurgent Huskies posted their second straight shutout, blanking Wyoming Indian 13-0 to win their Class 1A West Conference opener and improve to 2-1 overall following their season-opening loss to intra-district rival Rocky Mountain.

Karla’s Kolumn
The perfect weekend

By Karla Pomeroy

The first day of fall came on Monday, signifying one of my favorite seasons. Well, fall is sort of my favorite season, only because it usually signifies the start of football season. I have been a football fan from as far back as I can remember, the Broncos Super Bowl loss to the Dallas Cowboys, to be specific. I rooted on Craig Morton and thought he was one of the best, until John Elway, of course.
I watch other sports during the spring and summer until football returns, rooting on the Rockies and watching NASCAR drivers go around in circles, but my attention to those sports fades dramatically come September.

Huskies regroup, pound Hulett in home opener
By Nathan Oster
If there’s been one constant for the Burlington Huskies through the first two games, it’s been defense.
A week after losing a hard-fought, defensive struggle in Byron, the Huskies returned home and picked up right where they left off, shutting out Hulett 12-0 to move to the front of the pack in the Class 1A West Conference.

Lady Huskies struggle

By Marlys Good

The gymnasium at Big Horn was not a friendly environment for the Burlington Lady Huskies last weekend.
Coach Jerry Patrick summed the Big Horn Invitational Tournament up in five words, “It was not a good weekend.” Burlington lost its first pool match to Wright, 16-21, 9-21, and its second to Big Horn, 8-21, 12-21, before getting a victory over Moorcroft, 21-15, 21-20, in the final match in preliminary pool play.

Grading change proposed for AP courses

By Karla Pomeroy

Advanced placement students at Riverside High School no longer have the opportunity to receive up to a 5.0 grade point average after a request by the Wyoming Department of Education.
RHS Principal Tony Anson reported to the Big Horn County School District No. 4 Board last Tuesday that the Department of Education is encouraging districts to adopt a 5 percent curve for all advanced placement (AP) and college concurrent enrollment classes, but not to go above a 4.0 grade point average.

Judges ceremony humorous but dignified

By Karla Pomeroy

Tuesday morning I traveled to Worland to the Washakie County Courthouse to attend the swearing-in ceremony and robing ceremony for Fifth Judicial District Court Judge Robert Skar. It was my first such ceremony and I found it to be enjoyable and not at all stuffy like I had feared and expected for a government-run ceremony. Mike Messenger, speaking for the Judicial Nominating Commission, was the first guest speaker and spoke about the selection process. Things then turned a bit humorous with Scott McColloch, representing the State Bar, doing his interpretation of Johnny Carson’s Carmac the Magnificent, telling funny stories about Judge Skar and his clerks from Circuit Court.

Lady Rebels stay undefeated in conference

By Marlys Good
The long-awaited volleyball match between the Riverside Lady Rebels and Greybull Lady Buffs took place in the Buff gym last Thursday, and it did not live up to its hype. Riverside had little trouble subduing Greybull in three games, 25-9, 25-16, 25-10.
“It was our first conference match on the road and I was curious to see how the girls would handle it, especially against Greybull, ” said Coach Lindsay Schaffner. Nothing to worry about. “The girls came out very relaxed, smiling, having a good time, and playing the type of volleyball we need to play all season long.”

Miscues spell doom for Huskies in Byron
by nathan oster
The Burlington Huskies left Byron last Friday night feeling like they had done enough to win.
But unfortunately for them, the scoreboard told a different tale, as it was the host Rocky Mountain Grizzlies, and not the Huskies, who emerged with a hard-fought, 14-8 win in non-conference action.

Enjoying smoke-free dining

By Karla Pomeroy

Wyoming Department of Health officials released a report last week describing how public policy, such as smoke-free laws, can effectively reduce smoking rates and secondhand smoke exposure. The Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center prepared the report and while I don’t know what information they used to prepare it I can say I have enjoyed living in a community with a smoke-free law.

Ready to get to know South Big Horn County

By Karla Pomeroy

It is good to be back in Big Horn County. I am excited to be the managing editor for your community newspaper.
I began my newspaper career in community journalism starting as a senior at Hot Springs County High School writing for the Thermopolis Independent Record. I continued working in community journalism for 16 years as news editor for the Lovell Chronicle. Two years working for a daily newspaper in Laramie made me longing for small-town community journalism again, where 70th wedding anniversaries and 100-year birthdays are big news and deserve more than four inches of copy.
