Small private school in Macedonia a perfect fit for Adams

When Jeb Adams, son of Eric and Linda Adams of Basin, graduated from Riverside High School in 1995, who would have guessed that 15 years later he would be living in Macedonia as the co-founder/teacher of a small private school that provides English and Albanian language courses to the  community of Kicevo and other small villages surrounding it? Co-founder/teacher is Jeb’s wife Kristina, a native of Kicevo, whom Jeb met when he was serving in Macedonia in the Peace Corps in 2000-2001.

October 8, 1934 – March 13, 2009

Our dad, Ralph Dickson Mercer came into this world on October 8, 1934, born to Ralph Donald and Catherine Jane Hedrick Mercer in Basin, Wyoming.  Dad was the first of four boys that would be born into his family.  He left this world in the early hours of Friday, March 13, 2009 following a courageous battle with various health issues and complications from surgery.

Lady Huskies begin defense of State title; boys team has the numbers,  should be strong

The track season officially opens this Saturday with the annual Bill Gerrard Invitational meet in Greybull Saturday, but the Burlington Huskies will be sending just a minimal number of athletes to the competition. Not that they don’t have the numbers, 25 boys, 17 girls, the most they have ever had, according to Coach Albert Henderson, but Henderson gave his athletes a break between the 1A State basketball tournament and the first track practice.

Lady Rebels go 1-2 at state tournament

The Lady Rebels quest for the 2A State basketball championship went up in smoke Thursday when they fell to Burns 41-37 in the state tournament opener in Casper. Riverside dug itself a 17-1 hole in the first quarter (down 17-5 at the buzzer), and it was too much to overcome.

DEQ regulations behind landfill rate increase

Rates at the two operational Big Horn County landfills are going up — a direct result of new, tougher laws designed to protect the environment.
Beginning in July the tipping fee at the South Big Horn Landfill between Greybull and Basin and the Lovell landfill will increase by half-a-penny per pound, from 3 cents to 3.5 cents.

C.A.R.E.S. pleased with some legislative action, disappointed in others

The Wyoming Legislature took strides to improving laws for domestic violence victims, but still has more work to do, according to Crisis And Referral Emergency Services (C.A.R.E.S.) executive director Leslie Hoffman.
Hoffman said two bills approved by the Legislature addressed firearm rights. She said Senate File 70, mandates that judges notify a person if the misdemeanor charge he/she is facing will result in the loss of firearm rights if convicted.

Rebels season ends with tough losses to Fremont County teams

Unfortunately, the two teams they faced early in the tournament also had their “A” game on and Riverside’s post season run ended Friday morning in the Riverton Middle School Gym.

The Riverside Lady Rebels had to settle for second best at the 2A West Regional Tournament in Riverton last weekend when they got throttled by a good Mountain View team 56-31 in the championship game Saturday afternoon. Ending with a sub-par performance was not the way Coach Cory Sova would have scripted it, but that’s the way it played out.

Budget time a great time for setting long-term goals

It’s budget time and it appears the town of Basin is going to be faced with some tough decisions this year.
Mayor Phil Juillard announced Monday that the town will be facing an increase of $13,000 at the landfill. At February’s meeting, town accountant Don Russell said he expected revenues from the sales and fuel tax to drop due to the economy. He said the purified water budget has more expenditures than revenues so the town may have to look at increasing revenues in this areas.

Vanderpool completing lots of training before deployment to Kuwait

Nineteen-year-old David Vanderpool joined the Wyoming Army National Guard 2.5 years ago in his junior year at Riverside High School. He knew it was more than likely he would be deployed overseas, after all it was after his brother Matt, returned from serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Guard, that he decided to enlist.
