Basin resident seeks answers on dog license fee increase and spending

BHC Predator board sets budget, expects shortfall

Members of the Big Horn County Predator Management Board met Feb. 22 in Greybull and finalized figures for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. The budget will be submitted to the Wyoming Animal Damage Management Board, along with a grant request of $219,000.

Budget session nears end

With more than 40 bills on General File Monday, Sen. Gerald Geis (R-Worland) said that some bills likely would die and not pass this session.
Monday was the deadline for bills to pass the Committee of the Whole (first reading) He said there would be no way the Senate could get through all 40 bills. “There’s none I would have a heartburn over (if they did not pass). The state will run just fine without them,” Geis said.

Lady Huskies come from behind
for wins in semifinal and title games

Second mission accomplished. The 1A West Regional Girls Basketball championship trophy is in the hands of the Burlington Lady Huskies, thanks to a 61-51 victory over Meeteetse Saturday afternoon in Lander. Their third and final mission, the 1A State Championship, lifts off this morning at 9 a.m. at the Casper Events Center where the Lady Huskies will meet Upton.
Sharing the bracket with Burlington and Upton are Cokeville and Hulett. Coming up the other side are Kaycee, Snake River, Meeteetse and Arvada-Clearmont.

Lady Rebels fall short in state bid; ousted by Rocky Mountain

The Riverside Lady Rebels, after losing to Kemmerer, 41-25 in the 2A West Regional Girls Basketball Tournament opener in Riverton last Thursday, March 25, topped rival Greybull in a come-from-behind 41-35 victory Friday morning, and were just one hurdle away from qualifying for the State 2A tournament in Casper this weekend.

Rebels season ends as Riverside falls in play-in game

The season for the Riverside Rebels ended Thursday just as it had started, with a loss to the Big Piney Punchers. Riverside opened the season with a loss to Big Piney at home as part of the Big Horn Basin Shootout, 61-31. On Thursday, in the play-in game for the 2A West Regional Tournament in Riverton, Riverside fell, 57-33.

State Legislature gets budget readings under way

The state budget is the topic of the week as the Wyoming Legislature continues its biennial budgetary session. A first reading of the budget went through both the House of Representatives and the Senate on Monday with a second reading planned for Tuesday with any budget amendments being introduced. A third reading is planned for Thursday.

I’m sitting at a banquet listening to some not-so-entertaining speaker while the NFL playoffs are on. My husband sweetly sends me texts so I stay updated on the scores.

Senate passes texting ban, heads to House

The Wyoming Senate and House are expected to devote most of next week working on the new biennium budget bill. In the meantime, Sen. Gerald Geis (R-Worland) said there are 129 House Bills, 10 House Joint Resolutions, 79 Senate Files and one Senate Joint Resolution that received introduction and will be considered during the 20-day budget session.
Geis said the deadline for introduction has passed and no other bills will be introduced this session.

Coming Soon: Crime stoppers text line

The TipSoft program, used by more than 600 crime stoppers programs, schools and universities is soon going to become available in Big Horn County. The program allows anyone to report a crime completely anonymously because the text messages are first routed through a server, which removes all identifying information and ties to the reporting party.

Safety main concern in allowing students to walk to school

The Safe Routes To School Committee has been working on the Wyoming School Travel Plan in preparation for making changes and improvements for the youth in Basin to walk or bicycle to school. The committee is ready to hear public input on what they have discovered so far and a public meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Basin City Arts Center.

Public input important in developing safe route plan
Want to make the routes for our children safer in Basin? Want to have a say in how those routes will be made safer, including where sidewalks should go, where more lighting is needed or not needed, whether more bus stops are needed or if fewer bus stops are needed? Then come to Monday’s meeting with the Basin Town Council and the Safe Routes to School Committee. The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at the Basin City Arts Center.

Lady Huskies staying on a roll

The upside in addition to the conference wins was that Coach Jerry Patrick could play his entire squad, and did so, giving all almost equal playing time.

Injunction sought against Roundup Ready sugar beets

Opponents of genetically modified sugar beets have filed a request for a preliminary injunction last week in U.S. District Court for the Northern Division of California. If approved, the injunction could force farmers to return to planting traditional seeds in the future. The vast majority of U.S. farmers — about 95 percent — planted the seeds in question during 2009.

Manderson stabbing sends woman to hospital

A young mother was taken by ambulance to Washakie Medical Center after being stabbed at her Manderson home on Sunday evening.
Clarence Cliame, 35, of Manderson was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with intent to cause bodily harm in connection with the stabbing.

The Riverside Rebels struggled to keep up with the quick feet and the strong pressure by the No. 1-ranked Wyoming Indian Chiefs at Ethete last Saturday as they fell 106-30.
Coach Brent Winters said while losing by that much is never good, he saw some good things in his players in their first game back after a three-week break. “It was a good experience for us. I knew they were going to pressure us. They backed off the pressure in the second half. At times we were able to break their press,” he said.

What’s next with safety measures?
Several years ago, post Sept. 11, a friend of mine traveled to Rome and back and for whatever reason was pulled aside at every airport for additional security checks. This friend is not of Arab descent, does not look threatening so why she was picked — it was the luck of the draw on the random checks, I suppose. She said on the final stop she said if they pulled her aside she was going to strip naked. Fortunately it didn’t come to that, but one wonders if that’s where we are headed after the attempted Christmas terror attack.

New prison to chop county jail revenue, jobs at stake

The $125.6 million prison opening next month near Torrington created many new jobs but some Big Horn County residents may lose jobs in the process.
Sheriff Ken Blackburn said Monday that the Department of Corrections contracts with the county detention center to hold between 12 and 16 inmates each day, which generates between $600 to $900 each day.
