Riverside Middle School basketball gets underway this weekend with a game against Greybull Friday and another against Burlington Saturday.
Head coach Calvin Brown said there are 27 players coming out for this year’s season, but he hasn’t determined his starters yet.
“We’ll make that decision closer to game time,” he said.
Looking forward, Brown said Riverside is fielding an enthusiastic team who’s been putting in hard work heading into the season.
Riverside could improve on defense from last year, Brown said.
Friday’s game against Greybull will be a challenge in every way.
“Our game plan will be the same for every team we play,” Brown said. “We don’t have size, so we must box out after every shot to limit opponents’ second chance for opportunities, and we have to take care of the ball so we get maximum shooting opportunities on the offensive side of the floor.”
In the end, this season is about building a better defensive mentality.
“We need to be a team that gets excited about playing defense and we need to make sure we are working harder on defense than we are on offense,” Brown said.
