The Basin ice skating rink is set to open this weekend.
The water is in, the ice is coming and the skates are sharpened in anticipation of the Basin skating rink opening Dec. 29-30, according to Brady Michaels.
Michaels is organizing volunteers to have the rink and hut open Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 – 3 p.m. While the hut will be open these hours, people with their own skates may skate any time.
As always there is no charge to use the rink, skates, drink and snacks. In addition to traditional skating there is also hockey equipment available for impromptu games. Michaels played hockey as a child and would ice skate on the river. His son, Cayden went to hockey camp in Cody earlier this year.
Michaels, his wife, their children and his mother-in-law are all helping but they would appreciate additional volunteers.
“People are welcome to make treats, hand out skates, hot chocolate and help in the warming hut,” Michaels said.
Plans are being made to have a New Year’s Eve event, but no time had been set by press time.
When asked why Michaels has taken on this project he said, “It is something my family can do together. It is something for other families to do together and it is great exercise during the winter.”
