The Burlington Huskies continued their reign over Big Horn Basin 2A schools with wins over Thermopolis on Friday at home and a win on the road at Cowley Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 6-0 with all their wins coming against 2A schools. They defeated Thermopolis 52-33 and Rocky Mountain 58-45.

On Friday, it was a battle in the first half with the Huskies taking a 23-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. “It was a messy first half.  We didn’t execute well with our transition game or offense. Our defense had moments of strength but lapses as well,” Coach Matt Davidson said.

The Huskies made adjustments at halftime and outscored the Bobcats 11-1 to lead 34-22 at the end of three quarters of play.

“We stepped it up defensively in the second half, which also got things going with fastbreaks,” Davidson said.

Burlington continue to pull away with a 18-11 fourth-quarter advantage.

Davidson said Jess McNiven and James Davidson came off the bench to provide strong support, scoring 20 and 10 points, respectively. Starter Daniel Davidson, with a “consistent effort” was the third player in double figures with 10 points. McNiven had a double-double with 10 rebounds. James Davidson grabbed eight. Preston Wardell led the team with 14 rebounds before going down late in the game with a sprained ankle.

Matt Christiansen led the team with five assists and Daniel Davidson led the team in steals with four.

While pleased with many avenues of the game, Davidson said,  “We did not take care of the ball as well in this game with 24 turnovers; many were unforced.”

Saturday the Huskies jumped out to a 13-5 first-quarter lead and led by five at halftime, 25-20. The hometown Grizzlies closed the game to one after three quarters, 35-34. With a tie game late in the fourth, the Huskies finished strong to grab the 13-point victory, 58-45.

“This was a good, tough game for us. Rocky played well. We add 25 turnovers which is above our game goal of 20. Our defense was not consistently tough or effective. But at times it was, and the players kept making the plays that needed to be made down the stretch,” Davidson said.

After suffering the ankle injury the previous night, Preston Wardell did not play. Jess McNiven left during the second quarter and didn’t return.

“Everyone else stepped up and finished well. I was proud of the team effort.  Trevor Wardell had his best game this season.  He was active in all aspects of the game. Nick Carrizales did a nice job as the floor leader. Landon George gave good minutes as our main substitute. He is improving every game.  Daniel Davidson played with lots of intensity. He didn’t rest much during the entire game and kept battling offensively and defensively,” Davidson said.

Daniel Davidson led three players in double figures with 21 points. Carrizales added 13 and Trevor Wardell 10. Daniel Davidson had a double-double with 13 rebounds. McNiven had eight boards in his shortened game and James Davidson grabbed eight rebounds. Carrizales had four assists.

The Huskies have two more games scheduled before taking a break for the Christmas and New Year’s holiday. They played Greybull Tuesday. Details of the game will be published Dec. 27, along with details of the Shoshoni game tonight at 7 p.m. on the road.

Davidson said, “We are going to look at defensive rotations, reducing turnovers, better communication and making the offenses flow.”
